Mapledown School

Head's welcome

Welcome to our school website!

We hope you will find everything you need to know about us and find some useful links to other websites and organisations too.

I am delighted to introduce myself as the new Headteacher at Mapledown School. I have already received a very warm welcome from the whole school community, and I am excited about the next phase in the school’s journey. I am thrilled at the prospect of working with you and your child. My ethos and vision for the school fully align with Mapledown’s existing mission, which is to provide a learning environment for all members of the school’s community, where everyone can work and learn together. I am also determined to work with you, your child and our staff to ensure our wonderful and inspiring students are given the dignity of challenge, and opportunities to be heard, become as independent as possible and achieve their very best. I believe all young people have the right to have their individual needs met, and therefore Mapledown staff will be providing learners with a personalised curriculum which is focused on the successful acquisition of knowledge and skills which will have a positive impact on their lives and opportunities. Our staff members are creative and hardworking and the school holds numerous awards for excellence. Our last Ofsted inspection (July 2018) rated the school as 'good' overall.

Mapledown School is Barnet’s only secondary school for students with Severe and Profound Learning Disabilities (including Autism) and we have spaces for up to ninety students, aged 11 to 19 years old. The school is organised into eleven classes in three distinct ‘Learning Zones’. All students have an Educational Health Care Plan or are admitted on an assessment basis. We have developed strong partnerships with families and carers and will always place the needs of students at the heart of all we do.

Mapledown provides a holistic environment for young people and their families, and we work closely with a variety of health professionals to ensure the health and therapy needs are incorporated in our students' daily experience. We are committed to working in partnership with our parents to maximise the potential of everyone, and to prepare our students for adult life.

I hope you find our website useful and that you can gain a sense of our work and achievements looking through it. If you would like to find out more about us, please contact us.
