Medical - School Nurse 

The role of the school nurse is to provide holistic care for all the pupils within the school who have a range of complex medical and health needs. The nurse works closely with school staff and parents and carers in order for the pupils to reach their full potential regardless of their individual health needs. The nurse is responsible for the following.

Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating individual health care plans for pupils with complex health needs

Supporting school staff by providing appropriate training around specific nursing needs and tasks. For example: gastrostomy feeding and tube changes, wound assessment, enteral feeding support, tracheostomy tube changes, suctioning, administration of medication, and weighting pupils.

Working in partnership with other agencies statutory, private and voluntary sectors in order to meet the complex health needs of pupils and their families and carers.

To liaise with multi professional agencies, eg school doctor, paediatric consultants, dieticians, orthoptist, GPs, clinical nurse specialists, therapists, child and adolescent mental health services, adult health services, social services and education.

To participate in the healthy schools programme

To arrange and deliver immunisation clinics for Diptheria, Tetanus, Polio, HPV vaccinations and BCG.

To arrange clinics in school for the school doctor, paediatric consultants, dietician, orthoptist.
